David Ogilvy
(1911-1999)
is one of the most famous and recognized
advertisers to have worked the business.
He has left a legacy and a body of work that
is still being referenced today and has earned
him the
reputation of "The Father of
Advertising."
He started his sales career selling
stoves, door-to-door, in England. His
talent for sales was evident and he was
asked to write a manual for other salesmen.
Decades after he left the company, his
instruction manual was still being used.
David Ogilvy then moved on to work for an
advertising company, which would send him to
America.
Once, there he obtained a position with the
Gallup Audience Research Institute.
His time there was one of the greatest
influences on his future work, intensive
research became the backbone of his
advertising philosophy.
Years later David Ogilvy and a
partner founded their own agency Ogilvy &
Mather. The company was built around
David's advertising principal, that
knowledge about a product's consumer is what
leads to advertising that sells.
The company would go on to create some of
the most memorable campaigns, and was a
benchmark in the industry. Ogilvy's
work for clients such as Rolls Royce, Dove,
and even Puerto Rico secured his place at
the top.
He would stay at Ogilvy & Mather and
continue to contribute incredible work until
his retirement. In 1977 David Ogilvy
was elected to the US Advertising Hall of
Fame in 1977 and to France's "Order of Arts
and Letters" in 1990.
David Ogilvy died in 1999 and is
remembered as one of the few people to have
shaped 20th century advertising. To
this day he is a powerful influence on young
up-and-coming advertisers through his best
selling books, Ogilvy on Advertising and
Confessions of an Advertising Man.
