Skybiz was an online business that
spread to over two million websites and around two hundred
countries. Skybiz’s main product was what they called WebPacks
which they sold though an army of affiliates.
Skybiz operated like any down line multi level marketing network
does. The people that they recruited needed to sell a certain
amount of WebPacks before they could see a cent of their
commission.
The reason that this review is in the past tense is because as
of 2001 Skybiz has been permanently shutdown by the FTC
on accounts of being a pyramid scheme.
The difference between an MLM and a Pyramid Scheme is that even
though they use the same business model in an MLM an actual
product is sold while a Pyramid Scheme only sells memberships
into the Pyramid Scheme, which is essentially what Skybiz was
doing.
Skybiz countered the attack saying that they in fact do provide
a service in the form of their training and website. However the
government stipulates that in addition to having a product or
service for sale it needs to be something that a reasonable
person would purchase without compensation. This is where Skybiz
failed to prove it self, since the only reason people were
buying into Skybiz was because they claimed you can make a
profit.
There have been rumors of a Skybiz come back but I’m sure
it’s doubtful since there reputation is tarnished by the FTC’s
case. There have been some Skybiz spin off operations but these
types of businesses usually come and go after they get their
money or get shutdown.
