About Upside Travel
Upside Travel, found online at Upside.com, is a new rewards company that promises to help companies save money on their employees’ business travel while giving the travelers themselves a chance to earn gift cards.
How Does It Work?
According to their website, Upside Travel says that they will help people make all their business travel arrangements and give them an opportunity to get free gift cards to use during their travel or at their favorite stores. Their site says that “all it takes is just a little flexibility.”
Upside Travel arranges the sale of flights and rooms for business travel, and on each trip you plan they will offer you the opportunity to make small changes to your planned trip in exchange for free gift cards. Their website says that simply making the choice to use a different airport could be worth $50-$75 in free gift cards, while staying in a hotel a few blocks from your convention center could get you $150 or more in free gift cards, all while saving your company money.
Currently this company is preparing to launch and isn’t operating fully. Their website says that they are asking people to submit their email address to their site in order to receive a VIP Invite when this company is prepared to launch their Beta Test and eventually their full services.
If you receive an invitation you’ll be ready to create your registration and begin using their mobile application to make your travel arrangements. This app can be used before you travel and while you are traveling in order to consistently find opportunities to receive gift cards. The website says they’ll never expect you to make changes you aren’t comfortable with – when you set up your registration you will be asked questions about your travel preferences so Upside knows what options to give you.
Since this service has not officially launched yet, it is completely free to sign up to receive information as they progress. It does not appear that they will be charging people fees for their membership, but this can’t be guaranteed because this company is still in its early stages. More information will be available once they are fully in operation.
Because this company does not appear to charge their members any fees for the opportunities they give them, they also do not provide their customers with any Refund Policy at this time. If you have purchased something that you wish to receive a refund for, you will need to speak directly to the party from which you made your purchase and adhere to any policies that they may have in place.
Customer Service Contact Info
Customers who would like to contact Customer Service with any questions, concerns, or complaints can do so by phone at 855-252-2151, by email at [email protected], or by submitting them directly to their website through their Contact Us link.
As mentioned above, since this company is still in pre-launch there are not any customer reviews available for them at this time. There are travel websites and travel blogs that discuss this company, however, and they are all very excited for the type of opportunities this company wants to offer both travelers and their employers.
Competitors and Alternatives?
There are many different travel companies that offer their customers various Loyalty Programs which can be used for upgrades, gift cards, or other kinds of benefits, but these are generally tied to the airline, hotel, or other travel service you use most often.

I’ve used Upside for three different business trips, and it’s been great. You have to be flexible — you may not get your favorite hotel or airline. But it’s actually fun to try out different hotels and getting gift cards when you book is awesome. Upside’s customer service is great, too. They’re super responsive, and they’ve even thrown in little perks like free coffee or upgraded seats on flights. I highly recommend Upside!
I haven't used this site and likely wouldn't based on one reason. All of my travel is booked for my company purposes where I am employed.
Ironically, I am likely the customer they are targeting, but having heard their radio spot, there is potentially a major problem here. As a fair warning to others, what they are pitching can potentially get you fired at the very least and possibly put you on the bad end of some legal problems as well. Offering kickbacks that have monetary value in exchange for booking through their service is a big no-no at most if not all companies. If you accept any kind of consideration like this (gifted to you personally) the company can come after you for the full value of those gifts (gift cards), unless of course you give the cards to the company or the company authorizes you to receive these cards (not likely).
Now, one commenter from another site stated that what would be the issue if you were still getting the best cost on the travel for the company. It wouldn't make a difference. You are still receiving gifts in exchange for company business, best price or not.
I am not advising people to use or not use the site, but I am warning potential users of the very real possibilities of using such a service.
I have booked one trip that I had to cancel and reschedule. You can tell that they are a new company and still working out some kinks, but all and all very positive experience. The reschedule only cost $200 which is straight from American Airline policy. The rest of the airline cost was credited back to me after I rebooked the trip. I did have to contact customer service to get the refund, but they were very helpful and polite. They have a great selection of gift cards to choose from and you get them instantly via e-mail and just print them out. Definitely look for coupon codes when you book, I used promo code LANCE and got $200 e-gift card. They also wrote and sent me a hand written thank you not which contained another promo code for me to use on my next trip. Even with some bumps in the road they have a strong start, and with their eye on customer service I think this will grow to be a great service used by many.
