About UW Flexible Option
The University of Wisconsin Campus System has begun offering a new distance learning option for motivated students looking to earn a degree or certificate that is called the UW Flexible Option.
The University of Wisconsin is well known and respected for both their on campus degree programs, as well as their online options for both degrees and non degree certificate programs.
However, they now offer a new approach toward higher learning that they say is different from both face to face instruction and traditional online instruction.
This new option is intended to offer a more personalized, convenient, and affordable way for adults and other nontraditional students to earn a University of Wisconsin degree or certificate while balancing work, family, and other commitments.
The Flexible Option allows students to earn credit for what they already know. You use the existing knowledge you already have from any area of life - whether prior coursework, military training, work experience, or others - to make progress toward your degree.
This Option also lets you move at your own pace. Your progress toward your degree is marked by assessments of your competencies, not by the time you spend in a classroom. You can choose when to take the assessments based on your own schedule. When you pass a competency, you just move on to the next one.
When you begin your program you will get to work with an Academic Success Coach, who will help you create a learning plan and timeline that fits your personal goals and knowledge.
The cost for the UW Flexible Option program is determine in two ways. First, you can choose a subscription term of three months for a flat rate of $2,250. This option is intended for people who have the time and want to earn their degree or certificate quickly.
The second choice is the Single Competency Set Option, which is a better choice for very busy students who will likely have to move at a slower pace and can only concentrate on a single series of assessments at one time. This option costs $900.

I have been a student in the UWM flex option program for a year. I'm pursuing the BS in Information Science and Technology. The course material's are very cutting edge and are much more independent than standard online classes. It's actually a lot harder than going to class, but when factoring in the responsibilities of life, the flexibility is worth it. This is a respected school and they are continuously improving the program. If you want an easy online degree try University Phoenix or WGU. I'm also from WA state and I don't get charged out of state Tuition. I'm paying 1/3 of the price I would here in WA for a comparable school.
Poorly staffed, poorly implemented. This program seems as though it's been thrown together in a few months, and in many ways it has. The program I almost signed up for was antiquated and out of touch. I have found better resources online for free. Due diligence: ask a lot of questions and know what you are getting into, because they don't want to tell you up front.
